SALVAGE BAGS

In the early 1800s, firefighting apparatus could not supply a steady and reliable stream of water, quickly leaving fires out of control. Firefighters often focused on immediate salvage efforts in the burning building and buildings surrounding the blaze. Because of this effort put forth by the firefighters, many homes were equipped with linen salvage bags, prepped and available for immediate use. Each salvage bag was marked with the homeowner’s name to ensure the goods would be returned to the proper household. Firefighters would also often carry their salvage bags labeled with their names.

All salvage bags featured in the Koorsen Fire Museum's collection are marked with a name, fire company, and year of use.
